Benzodiazepines (ben-zoe-dye-AZ-e-peens) belong to the group of medicines called central nervous system (CNS) depressants (medicines that slow down the nervous system). They are often called “tranquilizers.” Some benzodiazepines are used to relieve anxiety. Others are used to treat insomnia. Others still are used in the treatment of muscle spasms, or to reduce memory of traumatic medical procedures, or to treat the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal, or to ease panic attacks, or to reduce the frequency of epileptic seizures. Many, MANY people are helped by them. But here’s the kicker: Benzodiazepines may be habit-forming (i.e. addictive), especially when taken for a long time or in high doses. Some choice, huh? THE BARD OF THE BENZODIAZEPINES is a place for people on these meds to vent their spleen.
